1 . Cllr. Mrs. Margaret Barker
Address: 30 London Street, Faringdon, Oxon. SN7 7AA
Phone: 01367 241001
Email: barkersawpits@aol.com
Position held: Chairman of Tuckers Recreation Ground Trust.

Profile: My business interests brought me to Faringdon to renovate an antique shop in London Street. We so liked Faringdon that my partner and I bought one of the properties into which we had divided it. We have not been disappointed and it is a privilege to be able to represent Faringdon on the Town Council. I am a VERY Independent councillor as I believe we should all work together for the town regardless of any political views. Much of my life has been spent in education, secondary and adult, and I have had a family of four so I am very aware of the importance of young people to a community. I will always try to be of service, but I have learnt during the past year that a Town Councillor has to work very hard to have any impact on the Vale.

Profile: I moved, with my wife Meriel, to Churchview House in 1972. Meriel was, for many years, Public Relations Officer for Oxfordshire County Council as well as a Faringdon Town Councillor and a founder member of the Joint Environmental Trust for Faringdon. Her main legacy to Faringdon has been the provision of the play area mounds and equipment at Marlborough Gardens. Due to ill health, Meriel has been forced to retire, her place being taken by myself on my retirement from a 36 year career in the Army. My relevant experience includes commanding Bovington and Lulworth Garrisons in Dorset, so I am well used to local politics and finance. I am also an active member of the Chamber of Commerce and local organiser of the ‘Sealed Knot’ re-enacting aspects of Faringdon’s Civil War history.

Most proud of achieving:

• The refurbishment of the Old Town Hall
As a District Councillor, working with Steve Leniec:
• Persuading the VWHDC to build a decent sized swimming pool in Faringdon
• Persuading the VWHDC Council to keep travel tokens for the over sixties and not replace them with "smart cards" which would have been useless in Faringdon.
• Stopping the District Council from wasting millions of pounds on an unsuitable property investment.
As a Town Councillor:
• The recent campaign to change the VWHDC plans for the future of Faringdon.
• Restructuring the council's financial base
• Bringing elections back into the democratic process in Faringdon.
• Leading a successful campaign to stop the owners of the Post Office moving to unsuitable premises in Dillons.

Most disappointed with:

• My failure to save the Community Association from the closure I had forecast, despite my best efforts and those of the management committee.
• The slow development of Tucker Park.
• Despite strong commitment, the failure to provide better facilities for teenagers.
• The reluctance of people to take part in our local democracy.
